Unknown Young Sailor
Is this John Clark?
John Clark was born on May 16, 1838. It is unclear whether or not he was born in Ireland or Liverpool, England. Legend has it that he emigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1850. The legend also states that he fought in the Civil War and 'jumped ship' after a years service. The intriguing photo below was sent to me by my second cousin Jim Bills. A Civil War uniform expert has stated that the young sailor depicted below is attired in a Civil War uniform. The letters 'ALA' are visible on his hat. According to the expert the letter 'C' precedes the 'ALA'. After inspecting the photo, I am not certain whether that is a letter or simply a shadow or something else. If you can identify the sailor or can offer some insight into his garb or simply have an opinion please email me at: Lizzygeo@hotmail.com . I will personally respond to all communications.
